Ceramic tile is one of the most durable building materials ever produced. But, everything has its weaknesses — tile, meet grout. The grout used to fill the joints between individual tiles is porous, soft, and easily stained. Luckily, there are a few cleaning tips to help restore the beauty of your tile and grout.
The moment a spill occurs, wipe it up with a damp cloth to keep the stains from setting. If you have tile in your bathroom, remember to use a squeegee after every shower to help keep soap scum, rust stains, and mold to a minimum.
Keep your grout stain-resistant by applying a sealer that repels water and oil-based substances. Re-apply this sealer periodically.
Sweep or vacuum your floors to remove dirt that can scratch the surface. Sponge or mop the tiles with an all-purpose cleaner and warm water. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the label of any cleaning product. Using more product than recommended can result in dull, dirty tiles.
Mold feeds on dirt, so get a grout brush to clean out all joints and corners. To prevent discoloration, clean regularly with a pH-neutral cleaner. If the grout is crumbling or powdery, there’s no quick fix. This is a sign that it’s time to regrout!
