It seems like there are many rules when it comes to deciding on home decor – including rugs. While there aren’t any definite rules, there are certainly a few do’s and don’ts you’ll want to be aware of before making a purchase.

 DO set a budget
You should buy the best rug – but one that you can afford. By setting a budget for yourself, you can rule out many options and work with the ones in your price range. Use the general cost of other furniture in your room as a guideline for how much you want to spend. For example, your rug should cost as much as your sofa or slightly more. .

DON’T go too small
What you don’t want is a rug that’s too small for your future. Rule of thumb: choose a rug that is two feet shorter than the smallest wall in the room. For a 10X12 foot space, look for a rug that is no more than eight feet wide. Dining room rugs should be at least 18 inches longer than the edge of the table so that it accommodates your dining room chairs.

DO get inspiration
Skim through interior design magazines or Pinterest for inspiration. You might be looking at high-end decor, but chances are you can find a very similar, more affordable style elsewhere.

DON’T settle
Rugs are an investment for our home – don’t choose a cheap material or texture. Look for good quality rugs like wool and silk, A high-quality rug will in fact look better overtime. In fact, wool can “develop its own patina” from exposure to light and air and foot traffic.
